OTAI
Otai, probably my new favorite drink! It was so good! Anyway, Sunday afternoon (after church and choir), Hannah and I went over to Stephanie (a girl in our wards house). Some of the people we hung out with on Friday night came over too (they live in South Auckland). Anyway Roy (from south Auckland), decided that he wanted to teach us how to make Otai! It was so much fun!
He brought all of the stuff! First he slices the watermelons. Now in America, we usually cut the watermelon. Not Roy, He chopped it. The knife didn't even go through the whole watermelon, and all of a sudden it was cut into halves and forks! It was so cool!
Once the watermelon is cut you then scrap the watermelon (with a fork).
Following scraping the watermelon, it was time to get the coconut. First you have to clean the coconut hairs. No one wants to have coconut hairs in their otai! Roy did this. He took a knife outside and started shaving it! I seriously thought he was going to chop is finger off! I was so scared for him!
After we cleaned it we chopped it open! Now we learned that the coconut has a face, and if you chop it right in between the eyes, it should just fall open into halves (of course Roy has it perfect so it split into halves.) Anyway, after that we got to drink the coconut water. It was really good. And I even got to drink it out of a coconut. I felt very exotic.
After this we had to scrap the coconut. Now when I do this in the states, Roy said I don't know how you are doing this. This is a homemade tool, so good luck. Then he said, well I guess a spoon will work, but you'll have to work extra hard! Trust me though, it's worth it!
After this we decided we wanted more watermelon. Roy and I decided to have a little race to scrap the watermelon. He had to do three quarters of it, and I had to scarp a quarter. Its sad to admit, but he beat me!
After this you add crushed pineapple, and heaps of sugar. When I say heaps of sugar I mean it! Then you mix it all up, and add ice to chill, and a little bit of water!
Then after it's all mixed you have OTAI! It is amazing! After drinking it plain, we added ice cream it tasted so good! Don't worry, I will be making this for you in the states once I get back I loved it so much! It was so much fun! Now here is something random, when I went over to Steph's house, I walk in the door and there was a little dog. Teacup poodle (it looked a lot like bubbles). So I started talking about Bubbles and how they looked a like. Well turns out...their dog was named Bubbles too! It was very funny! I got to pet her and play with her! Reminded me of Bubbles!
Anyway, after that we went over to a YSA member's house for Family Home Evening Night. It was a lot of fun! We had a spiritual thought and played some team games. I must say my team was by far the best, and don't worry we even got Lollies. It was a lot of fun though!
